DENISE BAZETTOUX, CATALOGUE RAISONNÉ OF GEORGES VALMIER, N° 766

Our delicate "Femme Couchée" of 1931 is likewise a preliminary study of a painiting executed later on, and sheds light on Valmier's intense exploration of colour at its purest. Even if abstraction is evidently the core theme here, the title invites closer examination and further interpretation, and helps us detect a sleeping female figure. Contrasting with the cubic background, the shape of a female body congeals in the gently curving lines. The subject's almost palpable intimacy and vulnerable introversion conduct a tension-filled dialogue with the forceful, extroverted colouration. This sensitive and subtly rendered composition possesses all of the qualities that made Valmier an established and self-confident artist of his day who, for all his modernity, never lost sight of the canon of earlier pictorial traditions.
