Rich in colour and expressiveness, Dietmar Brixy’s pictorial worlds are manifestations of pure vitality and strength. Oscillating between the representational and the abstract, suspenseful compositions come into their own in the works of this artist born in Mannheim in 1961, and provide insights into how he handles paint and its materiality. Owing to his impasto application of that medium, Brixy’s impressive paintings take on tremendous spatial presence and a haptic – indeed, even a sculptural – character attributable not least of all to his study of sculpture at the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Karlsruhe from 1985 to 1991. As he devoted himself increasingly to painting, however, he began producing wonderful works on canvas and paper today represented at numerous national and international art fairs and found in the holdings of public and private collections alike. In addition to the exploration of strong light-dark contrasts, the focus of this exhibition is on the pleasure the artist takes in experimenting with vibrancy and the interplay of light and shade. We are presented here with splendid works full of chromatic wealth, dynamic movement and artistic diversity.
